Round Plush Cockatiel Bird

     For those who love cute things, this Cockatiel bird is the perfect size to hold on your palm or attach to your bag as a keychain and be your traveling companion. You can also make a small blanket and attach him to make a lovey for your little one.

SIZE/MEASUREMENTS
approx. 3.50"height x 3.75"length

MATERIALS
*Crochet hook size: 3.5mm (E)
*Worsted Weight Yarn: Yellow (20yds), Warm Gray (23yds) & Mango (4yds)
*Stitch Markers to mark your rounds
*Fiberfill

*2 Black Round Doomed buttons or Safety Eyes (10mm)
*Tapestry Needle
*Matching Thread
*Hot Glue

*Makeup Blush & Q-tip (optional)

PATTERN NOTES - must-read...
 Numbers in ( ) at the end of each round/row indicate the total number of stitches.
 Always use stitch markers to mark your rounds.
 There's no need to sl st and/or ch when going to the next round unless stated to do so.
 Always do the 1st stitch where you slip stitch from the previous round.
 The chain, in the beginning, does NOT count as one stitch unless stated otherwise.
 You slip stitch on the first sc, not on top of the chain 1.

SPECIAL STITCHES
Picot Stitch - ch3, insert hook into the 3rd chain from hook, y/o & draw up the yarn through all the loops.

Double Crochet Cluster (2dc cluster) - Y/O hook, insert your hook into stitch, Y/O & pull up a loop (3 loops remaining), Y/O & pull through 2 loops (2 loops remaining), Y/O & insert your hook into same stitch, Y/O & pull up a loop (4 loops remaining), Y/O & pull through 2 loops (3 loops remaining), Y/O & pull thru the remaining three loops.

Note: If you are going to be using safety eyes, place them before closing the body. I am using round domed buttons.
HEAD/BODY starting with yellow

  Rnd 1: 6sc in magic ring (6)

  Rnd 2: 2sc in each st around (12)

  Rnd 3: sc in next st, 2sc in next st around (18)

  Rnd 4: sc in next 2 sts, 2sc in next st around (24)

  Rnd 5: sc in next 3 sts, 2sc in next st around (30)

  Rnd 6: sc in next 4 sts, 2sc in next st around (36)

  Rnd 7: sc in next 11 sts, 2sc in next st around (39)

  Rnd 8-11: sc in each st around, in last st of rnd 11 change to warm gray (39)

  Rnd 12: sl st in each st around (39)

  Rnd 13: working in the back loops only of the sl st's from rnd 12, sc in each st around (39)

  Rnd 14: sc in each st around (39)

  Rnd 15: sc in next 11 sts, sc2tog around (36)

  Rnd 16: sc in next 4 sts, sc2tog around (30)

  Rnd 17: sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog around (24)

Start stuffing the head/body moderately firm.

  Rnd 18: sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog around (18)

  Rnd 19: sc in next st, sc2tog around (12)

  Rnd 20: sc2tog around (6)

F/O and leave a tail for closing. Add any bits of stuffing need it to finish shaping the head/body. Weave in the tail through the final round and draw up tight to close. Secure and weave in the ends.

LEFT-WING with warm gray

  Rnd 1: 4sc in magic ring (4)

  Rnd 2: 2sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts, 2sc in next st (6)

  Rnd 3: 2sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts, 2sc in next st (8)

  Rnd 4: sc in each st around (8)

There is no need to stuff the wing.

  Row 1: flatten to match up the stitches and *picot st, sl st in next st* repeat from * to * 3 more times

F/O, secure and weave in the ends.

RIGHT-WING with warm gray

  Rnd 1: 4sc in magic ring (4)

  Rnd 2: sc in next st, 2sc in next 2 sts, sc in next st (6)

  Rnd 3: sc in next 2 sts, 2sc in next 2 sts, sc in next 2 sts (8)

  Rnd 4: sc in each st around (8)

There is no need to stuff the wing.

  Row 1: flatten to match up the stitches and *picot st, sl st in next st* repeat from * to * 3 more times

F/O, secure and weave in the ends.

FEET with mango; make 2

  Row 1: *ch4, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in next 2 chs* repeat from * to * 1 more time, ch3, sl st in 3rd ch from hook, sl st into the very 1st ch

F/O, secure and weave in the ends.

NOTE: all stitches will be done in the magic ring.

BEAK with mango

  Rnd 1: ch2, 2dc cluster, ch2, sl st, ch2, 2dc cluster, ch2, sl st, pull tightly to close magic ring

F/O, leave a tail for sewing.

FEATHERS on top of the head with yellow

  Row 1: ch5, sl st in 1st ch from hook, ch4, sl st into 1st ch, ch3, sl st into 1st ch, at the bottom of the sts sl st across

F/O, leave a tail for sewing.

TAIL FEATHERS with warm gray

Central Feathers make 1 

  Row 1: ch7, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 2 chs, sl st in next 3 chs (6) 

F/O, leave a tail for sewing.

Long Feathers make 2

  Row 1: ch6, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, sl st in next 3 chs (5)

F/O, leave a tail for sewing.


ASSEMBLE
     I recommend pinning the pieces in place before sewing them to make sure you have them in the position you like best before sewing. (Most people like to use the yarn at the end of the finished pieces to sew them in place, but I personally like to use matching thread).
     TIP...For anything that I’m going to be using felt, I like to first sketch it out on a white paper and make a stencil of what I need. Then cut it out. Then tape the stencil to the felt and cut it out.

     WINGS...place them on round 13 (where we did the color change). Only sew the top portion leaving the rest of the wing unsew so he can flap around.

     BEAK...place it in on round 11, in the center between both wings. Only sew the center portion.

     FEATHERS on the top of the HEAD...place it vertically on round 1, aligning it with the beak.

     FEET...place it on round 18; approx. 0.75" apart. Only sew the ch3 we did at the end of the feet to the body leaving the rest unsew.

     TAIL FEATHERS...find the middle of the back and place the long feather in round 16. The short feathers on either side of the long feather.

     EYES...I am using the rounded domed buttons since I have no crafts stores around my area that sell safety eyes. I will be placing them between round 9 and 10; approx. 1" apart.

     OPTIONAL…you can add a little blush underneath the eyes using makeup blush and a q-tip. Or embroider them using pink embroidery floss or thread.

Bird Applique

Ideas on how to use these appliques...
*These would be great to apply to any project.
*You can add them to kitchen towels,
*turn them into a keychain or fridge magnet.
*You can also make several and make a garland.
*Attach a ribbon to make them into bookmarks.

SIZE/MEASUREMENTS
Width: approx. 2" across from head to tail
...but they can vary based on yarn and hook size.

MATERIALS
*Crochet hook size: 2.5mm & 3.5mm (E)
*Worsted weight yarn: Main Color (3yds), Contrasting Color (1yd) & Orange for the beak (1yd)
*Tapestry Needle

BIRD with main color; 3.5mm
  Rnd 1: 10sc in magic ring (10) Pull as tightly as possible so no hole is showing through.
  Rnd 2: 2sc in next st, sc in next st, hdc+dc in next st, 2dc in next 2 sts, 2sc in next st, sc+dc in next st, 2tr in next st, 2dtr in the next 2sts (19)
  Rnd 3: 2dtr in next st, 1ttr in next st, you'll be leaving the rest of the stitches unfinished
F/O, secure and weave in the ends. 

BEAK with orange; 3.5mm hook
Join the orange yarn in the 7th stitch of the second row of the bird, sc in the same stitch.
F/O, secure and weave in the ends.

HEART WING with contrasting color; 2.5mm hook
  Rnd 1: ch2, 2dc, 3sc, 1dc, 3sc, 2dc in magic ring
Pull as tightly as possible so no hole is showing through. 
F/O, secure and weave in the ends.


ASSEMBLE
