Cactus Applique

Ideas on how to use this appliques...
*These would be great to apply to any project.
*You can add them to beach towels,
*turn them into a keychain or fridge magnet.
*You can also make several and make a garland.
*Attach a ribbon to make them into bookmarks.

SIZE/MEASUREMENTS
approx. size: 3"height x 3"length
...but can vary based on yarn and hook size.

MATERIALS
*Crochet hook size: 3.5mm (E)
*Worsted Weight Yarn: Green of your choice (5yds) & color of choice for the pot (4yds)
*Tapestry Needle
*Embroidery Floss: color of choice

PATTERN NOTES - must read...
 Numbers in ( ) at the end of each round/row indicate the total number of stitches.
 Always use stitch markers to mark your rounds.
 There's no need to sl st and/or ch when going to the next round unless stated to do so.
 Always do the 1st stitch where you slip stitch from the previous round.
 The chain, in the beginning, does NOT count as one stitch unless stated otherwise.
 You slip stitch on the first sc, not on top of the chain 1.

SPECIAL STITCHES
 Half Triple Crochet (htr) - Y/O hook twice, insert hook into stitch & pull up a loop (4 loops remaining), Y/O hook & pull thru 2 loops (3 loops remaining), Y/O hook & pull thru the 3 remaining loops.
 Triple Crochet (tr) - Y/O hook twice, insert hook into stitch & pull up a loop (4 loops remaining), Y/O hook & pull thru 2 loops (3 loops remaining), Y/O hook & pull thru 2 loops (2 loops remaining, Y/O hook & pull thru the 2 remaining loops.

** Cactus Idea #1 **

BIGGER BRANCH with the green of your choice
  Rnd 1: ch7, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next 2 chs, 5htr in next ch other side of the foundation chains dc in next 2 chs, hdc in next ch, sc in next 2 chs (15)
F/O, secure and weave in the ends.

MEDIUM BRANCH with the green of your choice
  Rnd 1: ch5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, 4dc in next ch other side of the foundation chains hdc in next ch, sc in next 2 chs (10)
F/O, secure and weave in the ends.

Note: when you see a + sign it means all those stitches are supposed to be done in that one particular stitch.
SMALL BRANCH with the green of your choice
  Rnd 1: ch4, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in next ch, sc+hdc+sc in next ch other side of the foundation chains sl st in next 2 chs (7) 
F/O, secure and weave in the ends.

POT with color of your choice
  Row 1: ch6, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across, ch1, turn (5)
  Row 2: sc in each st across, ch1, turn (5)
  Row 3: sc2tog, sc in next st, sc2tog, ch1, turn (3)
  Row 4: sc in next st, sc2tog, turn (2)
  Row 5: sl st in each st around the entire pot, join to 1st st with the invisible join
F/O, secure and weave in the ends.


ASSEMBLE
     I recommend pinning the pieces in place before sewing them to make sure you have them in the position you like best before sewing. (Most people like to use the yarn at the end of the finished pieces to sew them in place, but I personally like to use matching thread).
     BRANCHES...sew the branches in the position you like best or like shown in the picture.
     CACTUS to POT...sew the cactus to the pot.
     FLOWERS...these can be done however you like and in the position, you like best. I use pink embroidery floss and a 3.5mm (E) hook by attaching the embroidery floss to the back loops.
*ch5, sl st in same st you attach, ch5, sl st in same st, ch5, sl st in same st*
Follow these steps on the other 2 branches.
     POT...using any color of embroidery floss, embroider a zigzag design across the middle of the pot or any design you like the possibilities are endless.

  Rnd 1: ch8, hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in next 2 chs, htr in next 2 chs, 6tr in next ch, other side of the foundation chains htr in next 2 chs, dc in next 2 chs, hdc in next 2 chs (18)
F/O, secure and weave in the ends.

RIGHT BRANCH with the green of your choice
  Rnd 1: ch5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, 3sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, 4dc in next ch, other side of the foundation chains hdc in next ch, sl st in next 2 sts (12)
F/O, secure and weave in the ends.

LEFT BRANCH with the green of your choice

POT with any color of choice
  Row 1: ch9, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across, ch1, turn (8)

  Row 3: sc in each st across, ch1, turn (6)

*Worsted weight yarn: Ivory (3yds)
*Embroidery Floss: Black & Cream
*Felt: Light Brown & Pink
*Tapestry Needle
*Matching Thread
*Hot Glue
*Make-up Blush & Q-tip (optional)

PATTERN NOTES - must read...

 Always use stitch markers to mark your rounds.

TEA BAGGY with ivory

  Rnd 1: evenly sc in each st around the entire tea bag and make sure to make 2sc in each corner, sl st into 1st st from previous rnd
F/O, secure and weave in the ends.


ASSEMBLE
     TIP...For anything that I’m going to be using felt, I like to first sketch it out on a white paper and make a stencil of what I need. Then cut it out. Then tape the stencil to the felt and cut it out.
     BAGGY...bend the top down to round 7; leaving round 1 - 6 visible. Sew it in place.

     EYES…using black embroidery floss or thread; embroider the eyes in the position you like best by doing french knots.
     MOUTH...using black embroidery floss or thread; embroider the mouth in the position you like best, the possibilities are endless.
     BLUSH...you can use pink felt and make tiny circles or you can use makeup blush and apply some underneath each side of the eyes.

     TEA...using light brown felt or any color of choice create a stripy wave and glue it at the bottom of the baggy.

      LABEL...using pink felt or any color of choice, make a small rectangle. Fold it in half. Grab any color of embroidery floss, cut a strand (any size you desired), place it inside the folded rectangle and glue it close. The other end of the strand, place it on top of the baggy and secure it. Using black embroidery floss, create a line across where you place the strand of the label.

ASSEMBLE
     CRACK...on the upper left top part create a crack on the tombstone using black embroidery floss or thread.
     EYES...using black embroidery floss or thread, make the eyes however you like the possibilities are endless. I made 2 X's for the eyes.
     MOUTH...using black embroidery floss or thread, create a mouth.
     TONGUE...using red felt, create a tiny tongue and glue it in either side of the mouth.

Pizza Slice Applique

ASSEMBLE
     I recommend pinning the pieces in place before sewing them to make sure you have them in the position you like best before sewing. (Most people like to use the yarn at the end of the finished pieces to sew them in place, but I personally like to use matching thread).
     TIP...For anything that I’m going to be using felt, I like to first sketch it out on a white paper and make a stencil of what I need. Then cut it out. Then tape the stencil to the felt and cut it out.
FISH
     EYE...using black embroidery floss or thread embroider a black dot for the eye.

SAILBOAT
     BIG SAIL...sew it to the 3rd and 9th stitch of the mast on the right-hand side.
     SMALL SAIL...sew it to the 5th and 9th stitch of the mast on the left-hand side.
     FLAG...using red felt, make a flag (small triangle) and glue it on top of the left-hand side of the mast.

Sweet Heart Applique

     Start your Valentine’s Day crocheting with these sweet crochet hearts. They only take about 3 minutes to make and use less than 3 yards of yarn. They will not only motivate you but they will make the perfect embellishment for nearly any project. Here are a few ideas on how to use them...

Pull as tightly as possible so no hole is showing through from the magic ring.
If you want to attach a lollipop to the back of the heart, don't cut off the ends. Instead, use them to tie the lollipop in place. If not, then proceed to... F/O, secure and weave in the ends through the back of your heart.

F/O, secure and weave in the ends. Repeat same process on the other end.

TURTLE TAIL with lime green
On the left side, right next to the foot attach the yarn on the back loops.
ch3, sl st on same st you attach
F/O, secure and weave in the ends.

TURTLE HEAD with lime green
  Rnd 1: 5sc in magic ring (5)
  Rnd 2: 2sc in next st, 2hdc in next st, 3dc in next st, 2hdc in next st, sc+sl st in next st, ch4, hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in next, sl st into 1st st
F/O, secure and weave in the ends.


ASSEMBLE

     SPOTS…using green felt make the spots. They can be however you want them to be (circles, half circles, hearts, etc…). Glue them in the position you like best.

     EYE…using black felt, make a tiny oval for the eye and glue it in the face. If you like you can use wite-out pen and make a little dot in the black felt.

     SMILE… using black embroidery floss or thread, embroider a smile.
