Hatching Chick Applique

Ideas on how to use these appliques...
*These would be great to apply to any project.
*You can add them to kitchen towels,
*turn them into a keychain or fridge magnet.
*You can also make several and make a garland.
*Attach a ribbon to make them into bookmarks.
*Add them to the front of a homemade card.

SIZE/MEASUREMENTS
approx. 2.3"height x 2"length
...but can vary based on yarn and hook size.

MATERIALS
*Crochet hook size: 3.5mm (E)
*Worsted Weight Yarn: Yellow (5yds) & Gold (1yd)
*Stitch Markers to mark your rounds
*Felt: White, Black & Gold
*Tapestry Needle
*Matching Thread
*Hot Glue
*Makeup Blush & Q-tip (optional)

PATTERN NOTES - must-read...
 Numbers in ( ) at the end of each round/row indicate the total number of stitches.
 Always use stitch markers to mark your rounds.
 There's no need to sl st and/or ch when going to the next round unless stated to do so.
 Always do the 1st stitch where you slip stitch from the previous round.
 The chain, in the beginning, does NOT count as one stitch unless stated otherwise.
 You slip stitch on the first sc, not on top of the chain 1.

BODY/FACE with yellow
  Rnd 1: ch5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 2 chs, 5hdc in next ch other side of the foundation chains sc in next 2 chs, 2sc in next ch (12)
  Rnd 2: 2sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts, 2hdc in next 3 sts, sc in next 3 sts, 2sc in next st, sc in next st (17)
  Rnd 3: sc in next 4 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, 2dc in next st, dc in next 2 sts, 2dc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts, sc in next 5 sts, join to 1st st with the invisible join (19)
F/O, secure and weave in the ends.

WINGS with yellow
Right Wing: Attach yarn on the 4th st of the body
ch4, sl st in same st you attach, ch3, sl st in same st, ch2, sl st in same st
F/O, secure and weave in the ends.
Left Wing: Attach yarn on the 16th st of the body
ch2, sl st in same st you attach, ch3, sl st in same st, ch4, sl st in same st
F/O, secure and weave in the ends.

NOTE: I only made feet for the chick that has the cracked eggshell on his head.
FEET with gold
This is done all in the same st. Attach the gold yarn on the 9th st of the body, ch2, sl st in same st you attach, ch2, sl st in same st you attach
F/O, secure and weave in ends. Repeat the same process on the 11th st.

ASSEMBLE
     I recommend pinning the pieces in place before sewing them to make sure you have them in the position you like best before sewing. (Most people like to use the yarn at the end of the finished pieces to sew them in place, but I personally like to use matching thread).
     TIP...For anything that I’m going to be using felt, I like to first sketch it out on a white paper and make a stencil of what I need. Then cut it out. Then tape the stencil to the felt and cut it out.
     EYES...using black felt, make 2 small circles. Place them, in the position you like best.
     PEAK…using gold felt; make a tiny diamond-shaped and glue it on the position you like best.
     EGG SHELL...using white felt, make a cracked eggshell and placed it on the bottom or the top of the head.
     OPTIONAL…you can add a little blush underneath the eyes using makeup blush and a q-tip.

Inspired Mickey Mouse Birthday Hat

MATERIALS
*Crochet hook size: 4.0mm (G)
*Worsted weight yarn: Black & Red
*Pom-Pom maker (size of your choice)
*Felt: Yellow & Black
*Button (diameter: 12mm)
*Cardboard

My youngest boy turns one today and I wanted to make him a special birthday hat just for him to wear on his day.

I started looking around the web for a birthday hat and eventually found a perfect one from Mamachee. HERE you will find the crochet party hat pattern and step by step tutorial on how to reinforce it with cardboard paper.

On my hat, I added a chin strap and button. In one end, sew a button and on the other attach the yarn. Chain approx 55 (measure this on your child to get the correct length). Sc in 6th ch (this will created a buttonhole) and in each chain across, sl st again where you attach.
F/O and weave in the ends.

To make the Mickey Mouse appliqué...
I like to trace the images onto white paper to make templates. Then tape the template unto the felt that I will be using to cut out that perfect shape. You can google "mickey mouse applique" and you'll find several; as well for the numbers. Once you have cut out your appliqués from felt go ahead and glued them in place using hot glue.

Newborn - 3 months [12" to 14" head circumference]

3 - 6 months [14" to 16" head circumference]

6 - 12 months [16" to 18" head circumference]

Toddler (12 months - 3 years) [18" to 19.5" head circumference]
Also, I have available a teen-adult size [21" to 23" head circumference]

MATERIALS
*Crochet hook size: 5.0mm (H)
*Worsted weight yarn: Black, Red or Pink & Yellow
*Stitch Markers to mark your rounds

** Braids (for all sizes) **

Cut 18 pieces of yarn (9 for each earflap) about 30 inches long. (You can do the braids all yellow like I did or use 3 different colors for example black, red and yellow). Fold each bunch in half and push the folded end through an opening in the bottom of each earflap. Pull the unfolded ends through the loop and pull tight. Separated the colors and braid the strands. At the end, trim to desired length and tie a knot to secure the braid. Complete the second braid the same way.

NOTE: You can make the bow smaller or bigger by chaining fewer or more stitches in the beginning.

BOW in pink; 3.75mm (F)

  Row 1: ch15, hdc in 2nd ch from hook and across, ch1, turn (14)
  Row 2-6: hdc in each st across, ch1, turn (14)

F/O, secure and weave in the ends. With a strand of pink yarn about 8" long, wrap it several times in the middle of the bow and secure it with a knot. Weave in the ends.   


ASSEMBLE
     I recommend pinning the pieces in place before sewing them to make sure you have them in the position you like best before sewing. (Most people like to use the yarn in the end from the finished pieces to sew them in place but I personally like to use matching thread).
     EARS…using a pom-pom maker (the size of your choice); make 2 pom-poms. Don’t cut off the strand that you use to tie the pom-pom. Use the strand to sew the pom-poms on round 5 and align them to the center of the earflaps as in the pictures below.

     BUTTONS…you don’t want to use actual buttons since it’s a choking hazard. Using white felt make 2 circles and glue them in the position you like best. Or you can crochet the buttons.

** Braids (for all sizes) **

Cut 18 pieces of yarn (9 for each earflap) about 30 inches long. (You can do the braids all in one color or use 3 different colors for turquoise, white and light gray). Fold each bunch in half and push the folded end through an opening in the bottom of each earflap. Pull the unfolded ends through the loop and pull tight. Separated the colors and braid the strands. At the end, trim to desired length and tie a knot to secure the braid. Complete the second braid the same way.

ASSEMBLE
     I recommend pinning the pieces in place before sewing them to make sure you have them in the position you like best before sewing. (Most people like to use the yarn in the end from the finish pieces to sew them in place but I personally like to use matching thread).
     EARS…sew the top portion and a little bit of the sides between round 4 and 5. Pin them first and see how you like them best.

      MOUTH…draw out a template on a piece of paper on how you would like it to look like. Cut it out and tape it unto the felt ‘cause it makes it so much easier to cut it out exactly like your template. Pin and glue on the bottom of your beanie, just above the turquoise edging, between round 9 and 13.
     Spot for the eye…use any scrap of fabric you might have laying around. Same as the mouth, draw a template, cut it out, tape it on the felt and cut it out. I use the “Fray Check Glue” all over the spot so as time goes by it won’t start coming undone. Glue it just above the mouth on either side that you would like it at.

      NOSE…using black felt make a nose. You can also embroider it with embroider floss, the choice is yours.
     EYES…sew a button on top of the spot and the other just on the other side. Make sure before you sew them in place that their evenly place.

This beanie will go great with my Doggy Baby Booties that comes in 2 sizes
(newborn to 6 months & 6 months to 12 months).

The Adam Baby Blanket

SIZE/MEASUREMENTS
size: 29"  x  35.5" but can vary based on yarn and hook size

MATERIALS
*Crochet hook size: 6.0mm (J)
*Worsted Weight Yarn: Navy Blue (320yds), Gray (320yds) & Ivory (320yds) or colors of choice
*Fleece Fabric (amount & color depending on your blanket size)
*Tapestry Needle

PATTERN NOTES - must-read...
 Numbers in ( ) at the end of each round/row indicate the total number of stitches.

 The chains in the beginning DO count as a stitch.
 If you want to make the blanket bigger, you chain multiples of 4.
 Make the color changes in whichever row you like. I did mine after every 2nd row. Or you can make it all in one color.

BLANKET

  Row 1: ch100, 2dc in 4th ch from hook, *ch1, sk 3 chs, 3dc in next ch,* repeat from * to * 23 more times, ch4, turn (74 dc's & 24 ch1 spaces)

  Row 2: *3dc in next ch1 sp, ch1,* repeat from * to * 23 more times, dc into 3rd ch, ch3, turn (73 dc's & 25 ch1 space)

  Row 3: 2dc in next ch1 sp, *ch1, 3dc in next ch1 sp,* repeat from * to * 23 more times, 3dc in last ch1 sp, ch4, turn (74 dc's & 24 ch1 spaces)

  Row 4-68: repeat rows 2 and 3 or until you reach desired length.

BORDER

  On the last row, don’t finish off the navy blue yarn (or the color you use). If you haven’t already, weave in all the ends. Once that has been done, let’s go back to crocheting where we left at. Be sure to mark where you start off with a stitch marker.

  I made a simple border using 2 rows of single crochets (first navy blue, then gray) and finishing with a picot edging in ivory. In each corner do 2sc.

  The picot edging consists of *3sc, ch3, sl st to 1st ch* repeat from * to * all the way around. Try your best to land a picot stitch in each corner.

F/O, secure and weave in all the ends.

LAST STEP

  All that's left to do is to sew a nice warm fleece fabric on the back. Now, it’s ready to keep your little one nice and warm.

  This is my 3rd tunisian crochet project and this time around it worked up pretty quickly. Thinking of making our baby another blanket, but just don't know of what.
  When working from these graphs you gotta keep in mind that one square equals one stitch, the amount of stitches you need on your hook needs to be one more than the amount of squares you need.
Ex: If the graph has 32 stitches you'll need to chain 33 stitches.

Tips
-On the basics tutorial video, it says for the last stitch of the forward pass for you to put the hook through the last two end stitches. Cause if you don't and when it's time to make the border is going to look holey.
-On the color changes, don’t pull the yarns too tight. If you’re doing a graph with a lot of color changes start a new yarn thread cause if you keep pulling them too tightly the blanket its gonna get smaller as you continue making it. (This happen to me with my first Tunisian graph I ever made.)
-Measure! Measure! Measure! You don't want your blanket to look uneven.
-Remember to mark off each square/row as you go. Double check your work to make sure you haven't missed a square.

Now lets make the border
-When it's time to bind off your work, change to beige so you can start making the border and just continue single crocheting around the blanket 'til you reach the 1st single crochet.
-I made a simple border using 3 rows of single crochets (first beige, then light brown, then brown) and finishing with a picot edging in ivory. In each corner when making the single crochet rounds they need to have 2 single crochets.
-The picot edging consist of *3sc, ch3, sl st to first chain, 3sc* repeating from * to * all the way around. Try your best to land a picot stitch in each corner.

Last Steps
-All that's left to do is to weave in all the ends (that's the part I hate the most but its gotta be done)......
-......and sew a nice warm, snuggie fabric on the back. Now, its ready to keep your little one nice and warm.
