Penguin Beanie (knit)

    Simple but yet very stylish; for boys and girls of all ages. You can comfortably wear it during any season depending on the yarn you used and the weather, of course. This is an easy-to-knit beanie if you know the basics knit, purl and k2tog.

SIZE/MEASUREMENTS
Child (6yrs - 10yrs) [19" to 20" head circumference]
Teen/Small Adult [20" to 21" head circumference]

Adult (men) [21" to 23" head circumference]

MATERIALS
*Worsted Weight Yarn: Main Color & small amounts of white, black and gold
*DPN's or Circular Needles: 4.5mm & 5.0mm
*Stitch Marker to mark your rounds
*Tapestry Needle

GAUGE
Using 5.0mm needles...  4.5 stitches x  6 rows = 1"
Don't forget to check your gauge.

PATTERN NOTES
  This pattern can either be knitted when making the hat or duplicate stitched on afterward; the choice is yours. Here's a great video on how to duplicate stitch; HERE.

STARTING the BEANIE

CO 80 (90, 90) sts on 4.5mm needles with main color yarn.

Place a marker and join in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches.

Do ribbing (k1, p1) for 1 inch (approx. 6 rounds).

Change to larger needles and proceed knitting for 4 (4.5, 5) inches. This will give you approx. 27 (32, 37) rounds. Please follow the graph to learn which rows to make the color changes in.

SHAPING the CROWN

  Rnd 1: k8, k2tog around

  Rnd 2 and all even rounds: knit around

  Rnd 3: k7, k2tog around

  Rnd 5: k6, k2tog around

  Rnd 7: k5, k2tog around

  Rnd 9: k4, k2tog around

  Rnd 11: k3, k2tog around

  Rnd 13: k2, k2tog around

  Rnd 15: k1, k2tog around

  Rnd 17: k2tog around

Leave a tail (up to 8"). You will use a tapestry needle to thread the tail through the last remaining stitches on your needle. After removing the needles from the stitches, pull tightly to close the top hole. Lastly, hide the tail inside and weave it in.

Child size is up to the red line.

Penguin Earflap Beanie

SIZE/MEASUREMENTS

Toddler (12 months - 3yrs) [18" to 19.5" head circumference]
Child/Small Adult [20" to 21.5" head circumference]

MATERIALS
*Crochet hook size: 3.75mm (F) & 5.0mm (H)
*Worsted Weight Yarn: Black, White, Gold & color of choice for the bow
*Stitch Markers to mark your rounds
*Tapestry needle
*Matching thread

GAUGE

3 hdc stitches x 2.5 rows = 1"

At the end of round 8, laying flat = 6.25" in diameter

Don’t forget to check your gauge.

PATTERN NOTES

 Numbers in ( ) at the end of each round/row indicate the total number of stitches.

 Always use stitch markers to mark your rounds.

 The chain 2 at the beginning of each round counts as 1 hdc.

 You slip stitch on the top of the chain 2.

 When a round or row mentions “around/across” you will be working that whole sequence from that round/row around the entire piece. (EX: sc in next st, 2sc in next st, around = sc, inc, sc, inc,…)

SPECIAL STITCHES

Half Triple Crochet (htr) - Y/O hook twice, insert hook into stitch & pull up a loop (4 loops remaining), Y/O hook & pull thru 2 loops (3 loops remaining), Y/O hook & pull thru the 3 remaining loops.

Single crochet 3 stitches together (sc3tog) – is a decrease over 3sts. Insert yarn thru 1st st, y/o pull thru, insert thru 2nd st, y/o pull thru, insert thru 3rd st, y/o pull thru, & y/o pull thru all 4 loops on hook.

  Rnd 1: there is no need to chain 1 or turn your work. You'll sc around the entire piece and be sure to add 2sc in each corner. Join with an invisible join to the 1st st.

F/O, leave a tail for sewing.

Note: when you see a + sign it means all those stitches are supposed to be done in that one particular stitch.

NOSE with black, 3.75mm (F)

  Rnd 1: ch4, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, 3sc in last ch, other side of the foundation chains hdc+ch1+htr+ch1+hdc in next ch, 2sc in last ch, join with an invisible join to the 1st st

F/O, leave a tail for sewing.

EYES with black, 3.75mm (F)

  Rnd 1: ch2, 6hdc in magic ring, sl st into 1st st (6)

  Rnd 2: ch1, 2sc in each st around, join with an invisible join to the 1st st (12)

F/O, leave a tail for sewing.

BOW with color of choice, 3.75mm (F)

  In a magic ring sc, ch3, 3 tr, ch3, 2 sc, ch3, 3 tr, ch3, sc
Pull tight to close. F/O, leave a tail for sewing.

BRAIDS
Cut 18 pieces of yarn (9 for each earflap) about 36 inches long. Fold each bunch in half and push the folded end through an opening in the bottom of each earflap. Pull the unfolded ends through the loop and pull tight. Braid the strands and tie a knot to secure the braid. Complete the second braid the same way.

ASSEMBLE
     I recommend pinning the pieces before sewing them to make sure you have them in the position you like best before sewing. (Most people prefer to use the yarn at the end of the finished pieces to sew them in place, but I use matching thread).     

     FACE... toddler: 10 and 16.

Child/small adult: place it between rounds 12 and 19.

     NOSE...find the center and place it between row 5 and mid-way of the 3rd row.

     EYES...place them between rows 5 and 6; approx. 0.78" (2cm) away from the nose.

     BOW...place it in the position you like best.

Round Plush Penguin

     For those who love cute things, this adorable Penguin is the perfect size to hold on your palm or attach to your bag as a keychain and be your traveling companion. You can also make a small blanket and attach him to make a lovey for your little one.

SIZE/MEASUREMENTS
approx. 3.5"height x 4"length

MATERIALS
*Crochet hook size: 3.5mm (E)
*Worsted Weight Yarn: Black (45yds) & Gold (8yds)
*Stitch Markers to mark your rounds
*Felt: Black & White

ASSEMBLE
     I recommend pinning the pieces in place before sewing them to make sure you have them in the position you like best before sewing. (Most people like to use the yarn at the end of the finished pieces to sew them in place, but I personally like to use matching thread).
     TIP...For anything that I’m going to be using felt, I like to first sketch it out on a white paper and make a stencil of what I need. Then cut it out. Then tape the stencil to the felt and cut it out.
     FEET...try to find the position you like best. I place mine between round 20 and 21; approx. .50" apart. Only sew the 2 first rounds from the feet to the body.

     FLIPPERS...there is no need to stuff them, but you can place a pipe cleaner inside, so you will be able to move the flipper around. The side where we did the increases will be facing the back. Align them with the feet and place them on round 13. Only sew the top portion leaving the rest of the flipper unsew so he can flap around.

     SPOT...using white felt make an "apple-shaped" and place it in the center of the body.
 Just a little tip...if you are gluing your piece in place only place glue around the outer, not all-around cause it would make it difficult for you to sew the beak in place.

     BEAK...there is no need to stuff it simply flatten it out. Place it between round 13 and 14 in the center of our white spot. Tip...I used a ruler and pins to guide me in finding the correct spot.

     EYES...with black felt make 2 circles and with white make 2 much smaller circles. Place the black eyes between round 9 and 10; approx .75" apart. The white circles will be placed on the upper part of the black eyes.

     BLUSH...using pink embroidery floss or thread, embroider a line underneath the eye for the blush. You can also use pink felt and make a tiny circle or you can use makeup blush and apply some using a q-tip.
