Acorn Applique

By Janet Carrillo "damn it Janet, let's crochet!"
Ideas on how to use these appliques...
*These would be great to apply to any project.
*You can add them to kitchen towels,
*turn them into a keychain or fridge magnet.
*You can also make several and make a garland.
*Attach a ribbon to make them into bookmarks.
*Add them to the front of a homemade card.

SIZE/MEASUREMENTS
approx. 2.5"height x 1.75"length
...but can vary based on yarn and hook size.

MATERIALS
*Crochet hook size: 3.5mm (E)
*Worsted Weight Yarn: Toffee (5yds) & Light Brown (5yds)
*Tapestry Needle
*Matching Thread

PATTERN NOTES - must-read...
Numbers in ( ) at the end of each round/row indicate the total number of stitches.
Always use stitch markers to mark your rounds.
There's no need to sl st and/or ch when going to the next round unless stated to do so.
Always do the 1st stitch where you slip stitch from the previous round.
The chain, in the beginning, does NOT count as one stitch unless stated otherwise.
You slip stitch on the first sc, not on top of the chain 1.

SPECIAL STITCHES
Invisible join - this VIDEO explains how to do this technique.
Single Crochet 3 Stitches Together (sc3tog) - insert hook into stitch & pull up a loop (2 loops), insert hook into next stitch & pull up a loop (3 loops), insert hook into next stitch & pull up a loop (4 loops), Y/O hook & pull thru all 4 loops on hook.

ACORN TOP with light brown
Row 1: ch 4, 2sc in 2nd ch from hook sc in next ch, 2sc in last ch, ch1, turn (5)
Row 2: 2sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts, 2sc in next st, ch1, turn (7)
Row 3: 2sc in next st, sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in last st, ch1, turn (9)
  Row 4: sc2tog, sc in next 5 sts, sc2tog (7)
Rnd 1: ch1, sl st up the side, sl st in next 2 sts, ch3, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next ch, finish sl stitching around the entire piece, join to the 1st st with the invisible join
F/O, secure and weave in the ends.

ACORN BOTTOM with light brown
Row 1: attach the yarn to the back loops of the bottom of the top section sc in each st across, ch1, turn (7)
Row 2-3: sc in each st across, ch1, turn (7)
  Row 4: sc2tog, sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog, ch1, turn (5)
  Row 5: sc2tog, sc in next st, sc2tog (3)
  Row 6: sc3tog
F/O, secure and weave in the ends.
Row 7: attach yarn on any side of the bottom section and sl st across it to give it an even finish
F/O, secure and weave in the ends.

ASSEMBLE
I recommend pinning the pieces in place before sewing them to make sure you have them in the position you like best before sewing. (Most people like to use the yarn at the end of the finished pieces to sew them in place, but I personally like to use matching thread).
TIP...For anything that I’m going to be using felt, I like to first sketch it out on a white paper and make a stencil of what I need. Then cut it out. Then tape the stencil to the felt and cut it out.
TOP SECTION...using beige or color of choice embroidery floss or thread, embroider little "v" around the top in the position you like best.
EYES...using black felt make the eyes. You can play around with it and make them however you like; the possibilities are endless.
MOUTH...using black embroidery floss or thread, create the mouth. Make it however you like, the possibilities are endless.
CHEEKS...you can use pink felt and make tiny circles or you can use makeup blush and apply some on each side of the eyes.

ASSEMBLE
I recommend pinning the pieces in place before sewing them to make sure you have them in the position you like best before sewing. (Most people like to use the yarn at the end of the finished pieces to sew them in place, but I personally like to use matching thread).
TIP...For anything that I am going to be using felt, I like to first sketch it out on a white paper and make a stencil of what I need. Then cut it out. Then tape the stencil to the felt and cut it out.
SOMBRERO...add any stuffing needed and sew the cover to the bottom of the sombrero to close the opening.
On the brim of the sombrero embroider anything you like; I simply use green embroidery floss and made a zig-zag line all around.
SPIKES...place it between round 5 and all the way to the back of round 16.
FEET...try to find the position you like best. I place mine between round 17 and 18; approx. 0.50" apart. Only sew the 2 last rows from the feet (the flat area) to the body.
ARMS...there is no need to stuff them. Align them with the feet and place them on round 11 and 12.
SNOUT...stuff it lightly. Find the center of the front of the head/body and place it between round 11 and 12.
Using black embroidery floss or thread, embroider a nose on the tip of the snout.
EARS...there is no need to stuff them. Place them between round 6 and 8.
EYES...I'm using the rounded domed buttons since I have no crafts stores around my area that sell safety eyes. I'll be placing them between round 8 and 9; approx. 1.25" apart.
BLUSH...using pink embroidery floss or thread, embroider a line underneath the eye for the blush. You can also use pink felt and make a tiny circle or you can use makeup blush and apply some using a q-tip.
MOUTH...using black embroidery floss or thread, create the mouth on the snout. Make it however you like, the possibilities are endless.
